Weight Gain And Pregnancy
Today’s recommendations for weight gain during pregnancy are much more modest than they were in the past. If you begin your pregnancy with a BMI of 25-29 then you should only gain between 15-25lbs. If your BMI pre-pregnancy is 30 or higher then you should only gain about 15lbs while pregnant. While adequate weight gain is important for a healthy pregnancy and for the development of your baby but too much weight can cause problems such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and increase a woman’s risk for C-section. Long term effects from too much weight gain during pregnancy can lead to lifelong complications such has heart disease and diabetes. Most women only need to increase their food intake by 100-300 calories per day while pregnant and women should take care to eat a nutrient-rich diet to ensure both they and their baby get what they need during this time.
